Lifecycle GHG Emission Studies of Different Propulsion Systems ICCT

P3 Group

ICCT1 compares the Lifecycle Emissions of several propulsion types while P32 shows how CO2 emissions increase over the vehicle use phase. Electric cars have a bit more "CO2 debt" when they leave the factory, due to the battery. In Europe they repay this debt very quickly - P32 claims within the first 30,000 - 50,000 km regarding the used energy mix. After that, every additional km is much kinder to the climate than with a gasoline, diesel, or even hybrid car. All serious recent studies agree: For the European market in 2025+, battery electric cars are by far the best choice when it comes to lifetime greenhouse gas emissions and the advantage keeps growing as electricity gets cleaner. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids are only a small improvement over conventional cars, not a real solution for deep CO2 reductions. Source: [1] ICCT, [2] P3 Group
