Heavy Duty Mobility: Drivers for Battery Technology Adoption in Heavy Off-Road Applications The HD commercial sectors are navigating pathways towards electrification with a critical lens for Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and operability across a broad range of environments. Average Power and asset availability accounting for charging are good early indicators for an optimal battery technology strategy. While mini and light duty commercial sectors have begun to find a path utilizing NMC and LFP battery chemistries, OEMs and operators continue to search for the optimal strategy and technology that will enable larger vehicles to adopt full or hybrid electrification without diminished productivity.

STANDARD TCO DRIVERS
High utilization vehicles benefit from a significant reduction in fuel/energy cost as well as maintenance. However, if down time due to charging creates high out of cycle times, operators may need to increase their fleet size to compensate. This increase can counteract the initial fuel savings and harm TCO metrics. Selecting batteries focused on high-energy density, fast-charging, long-life, and/or a high-power hybrid solution will be important to finding the best operational fit.
