While there are several 1,000 MW BESS projects under construction, as of 2025 no single project has broken the 1 GW barrier - this is sure to happen in 2026.
Moss Landing - The 750 MW / 3,000 MWh BESS saw a Jan 2025 fire destroy a major battery building, taking a large portion (~300MW) of capacity offline and triggering an extended remediation and investigation.
Waratah Super Battery - The NSW 850 MW / 1,680 MWh project suffered a catastrophic high-voltage transformer failure in Nov 2025, halting final commissioning and pushing full operation into 2026.
