Cell Chemistry Predicts BESS Duration ‘Sweet Spot’ In BESS applications, the duration of the system ranges from 1 to over 100 hours, and cell chemistries tend to have ranges where their cost and performance are most competitive Li-ion has been the leader in the largest market segment, 2-4 hour projects. Falling costs have led it to be able to compete in 6-hour and 8-hour projects Alternative chemistries excel at longer durations (8h+), but these markets are at early stages and are still very small relative to the 2-4 hour market.
