BESS Use Case Overview BESS plants justify their capital cost by providing services to the power grid. Unlike PV or Wind, BESS do not create power, so their revenue is derived from contracted and real-time market participation.
BESS Use Cases vary widely across markets, but here we have highlighted 5 of the leading revenue mechanisms used by BESS to monetize their operations. Notably, these services can be ‘stacked’ allowing the BESS to monetize many different revenue streams, either simultaneously or at different times of the day, month, or year.
USE CASE TRENDS
Where BESS are connected directly to the grid they are referred to as Front-of-meter (FTM), and when they are connected in parallelwith a load they are referred to as Behind-the-meter (BTM). Most Utility-scale BESS installations are FTM while C&I and Residential BESS tend to be BTM.
