Market Saturation in ERCOT Leads to Revenue Cannibalization
In 2023, batteries in ERCOT earned an average of USD $168,504 per MW-year from ancillary services By 2024, average ancillary service revenues fell to USD $36,317 per MW-year – a nearly 80% decline The drop was due to an oversupply of BESS projects that led to more competition in the AS markets and a resulting crash in AS prices The change in revenue profile from ancillary services to energy arbitrage favors longer system durations (2hr-4hr systems) As such, average system durations in ERCOT continue to rise With the shift to more energy arbitrage in the revenue stack and the potential for new ancillary services that require 4hr duration (DRRS & DRRS Plus), the increase in average system duration should persist
