Differing Fire Codes Across States Only Adds to the Complexity of BESS Installation

Variations in fire codes (adoption and interpretation) across North America impact project design, cost, installation timelines, and even location.

Despite the recommendations of national baseline models (e.g., NFPA 70 + 855), fire codes for BESS vary from state to state and province to province in the US and Canada, adding complications to operators navigating permitting and local regulations. Fire codes can also have regional differences within state/provincial borders ⟶ Fire codes are adopted through amendments and operators evaluate local codes to de-risk projects and prefer states with predictable permitting environments to reduce delays and compliance costs.
