eVTOL 2040 Fleet Size Will Potentially Equal Current Commercial Airliner Fleet

eVTOL viability hinges on battery energy density and efficiency to meet range and payload requirements (~70–80 mile missions). OEMs are optimizing designs to reduce energy-intensive hover time and overall weight.

Expensive battery packs with limited cycle life are a significant component of operating costs, and improving lifespan/durability is critical for lowering total cost per flight.

Although not elaborated in detail in the brief, Bain highlights that battery tech and thermal management are part of broader performance challenges that affect certification, safety, and maintenance planning.

Significant technology improvements are still needed for a relatively small market that may only reach 10-20 GWh per year in the long term
