Large Facility Fires: Case Study- Moss Landing The lithium-ion fire at Moss Landing (natural gas-generation/BESS storage facility in Monterrey, California, United States) on January 16, 2025 destroyed 300 MW of the 750 MW battery storage facility and led to an evacuation of ~1200 people in the area. The region destroyed consisted of Moss Landing’s Phase 1 NMC battery system (manufactured by LG Chem) facility that was completed in late 2020 which marks the earliest installation at the site. No official root cause of the 2025 fire has been found, but fallout from the fire has lead to regulatory involvement from government agencies such as EPA, DTSA, and others. A timeline of regulatory events can be found below. While BESS regulations has changed significantly since the year this facility was deployed (2020; pre-NFPA 855), this event highlights the importance of strict safety regulations as BESS deployments continue to grow.
