Key Changes in Consumer Electronics Battery Safety Regulation (2025) Europe
Africa
EU: On August 18, 2025, the Directive 2006/66/EC was officially fully repealed so the sole battery regulation framework is EU 2023/1542 which is a comprehensive regulation on battery safety and battery sustainability.
Kenya: May 5, 2025 was earmarked as the full enforcement of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulation that outlined clear battery waste producer responsibilities to increase accountability and safety during e-waste disposal. Temporarily suspended but resumed in Dec 15, 2025.
UK: On April 30,2025 the PAS 7055:2025 standard was published which updates safety guidelines such as labels and warnings for button/coin cells up to 32mm in size.
Asia
Americas
China: On Jan 8, 2025, CNCA outlined the updated requirements of GB 4343.1-2024 and GB 4706.1-2024 standard which requires more stringent testing of battery-operated devices. Testing includes requirement of battery-operated tools and appliances to be tested with fully-charged batteries in actual operating conditions among others. GB/T 19865-2024 will be rolled out in Aug-2026, that includes updated temperature and battery warning labels for electronic powered toys.
USA: On January 8, 2025 the CPSC issued draft notice of proposed rulemaking (NPR) for increased safety standards in e-bikes and similar e-mobility products. Withdrew officially on August 18,2025, leaving regulatory advances in e-mobility in the air. Canada: On Dec 2, 2025 Health Canada issued a notice of intent for the proposal of new requirements for lithium-ion batteries in consumer products.
Saudi Arabia: On July 21, 2025, SASO notified draft technical regulation changes to a variety of sectors including E-mobility devices and EVs sold in Saudi Arabia. Regulation changes are to be made to be more inline with internationally accepted standards.
