Stabilization of the LMO (LiMn2O4) Spinel Structure “The LiMn2O4 spinel cathode offers a unique combination of 3D lithium diffusion, thermal stability, and cobalt-free chemistry. Although its energy density is limited by Mn3+- induced Jahn–Teller distortion and dissolution, modern doping and surface-engineering strategies enable LMO to remain industrially relevant in high-power, safety-critical, and cost-driven applications.” Cation and anion substitution may enhance LMO CAM performance.
Researchers from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign introduced a novel method to assess the potential dependent degradation of LMO cathode via manganese and oxygen sensitive scanning electron microscopy which elucidates the complex interplay of acid-base, interphase formation, and oxygen loss in Mn dissolution mechanisms in operating cathodes as a function of potential.[3] Researchers from Qingdao University, China has reported the LiB3O5 surface coating to the LMO which mitigates particle cracking, prevents Mn dissolution, and increases the lithium-ion conductivity rate. mitigates particle cracking, prevents Mn dissolution, and increases the lithium-ion conductivity rate.[4] GM Global Technology Operations LLC filed a patent on protective coating on Lithium Manganese Rich oxide cathodes (LMR) core with a protective lithium manganese spinel coating, aimed at improving long-term cathode performance in Li‐ion batteries.[5] DYSON TECHNOLOGY LIMITED has issued a patent, the invention provides a cathode composition for a lithium-ion battery of the general formula: Li 1+xMn1−xO2; wherein the composition is in the form of a single phase having a rock salt crystal structure; and the value of x is greater than 0, and equal to or less than 0.3.[6]
