Prelithiation of Silicon Anodes- Methods & Implementation Pathways for Introducing Lithium into Silicon-Rich Anodes Physical Deposition and Manufacturing-Based Approach
Chemical/ Direct Contact-Based Prelithiation (lithium supplier via direct chemical contact)
(lithium applied via controlled deposition or transfer processes)
Lithium metal or lithium-rich compounds are brought into direct contact with the silicon anode to introduce lithium prior to electrochemical cycling.
Advantages: Conceptually simple; enables high lithium loading.
Limitations: Challenging safety management, limited lithium dose control, and difficulties in achieving uniform prelithiation.
Vacuum-based lithium deposition: Lithium metal is deposited onto electrodes using thermal evaporation or related vacuum techniques to achieve precise lithium dosing.
Advantages: High control over lithium quantity and uniformity.
Limitations: Capital-intensive equipment and scalability constraints.
Electrochemical/In-situ Prelithiation (lithium introduced during electrode or cell fabrication) An ultra-thin lithium source (e.g., lithium foil or lithium-containing additives) is incorporated into the anode stack and activated during early cycling or formation.
Advantages: Better integration with existing cell assembly process..
Limitations: Restricted control over lithium delivery and potential variability across electrodes.
Transfer Printing: Lithium is first deposited on a carrier substrate and subsequently transferred to the electrode via a mechanical lamination or rolling process.
Advantages: Enables patterned, scalable, and roll-to-roll-compatible prelithiation
Limitations: Increased process complexity and sensitivity to handling and alignment.
Key Trade-offs:
ELECTROCHEMICAL VS DIRECT CONTACT APPROACH Source: Prelithiation Effects, Prelithiation of Silicon Anodes, Prelithiation strategies
Lithium dose control: Highest for deposition- and transfer-based approaches.
Safety and Handling: Most challenging for direct lithium contact methods.
Manufacturability and scalability: Favor in-situ and transfer-printing strategies.
Process integration: Varies significantly with existing electrode fabrication workflow.
