Natron Energy Founded in 2012, Natron Energy commercialized a sodium-ion battery, based on Prussian Blue analogue chemistry, for data center uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications. Citing insufficient funding, Natron permanently shuttered its operations in September 2025, including its R&D facility in California, pilot plant in Michigan, and Gigafactory plans in North Carolina. Natron’s assets have since been liquidated via ABC. Observations on Natron's Approach:
Natron pursued full vertical integration, from controlling design and process from anode/cathode synthesis up to BlueRack system engineering which proved technically and financially challenging.
Key Product Features:
185 W/L 2-minute power density at system-level
Cell-level safety (UL9540A testing verified no thermal runaway)
1C cycle life of >50,000 cycles and a high-power service life of >5 years
Funding: Natron received ~$370M in total funding from investors including DOE ARPA-E, Chevron Energy Ventures, Intel Capital, Khosla Ventures, Mercuria, ND Capital, and United Airlines.
