Industry Overview

Chinese battery recycling enterprises possess a complete industry chain in recycling networks, dismantling technology, and regeneration. Enterprises like Brunp Recycling and GEM have a unique advantage on the resource side through the "recycling-regeneration-cathode material" closed-loop model. China is expected to process 3.6 million tons of used batteries in 2025, accounting for 80% of the global market.

Battery recycling in China is entering a phase of rapid expansion. Since MIIT released the first recycler whitelist in 2018, industry participation has accelerated; by 2024, five whitelist batches cover 156 licensed recyclers, and the market is projected to reach US$78 billion by 2025.

Leading players are scaling rapidly. For example, Brunp, CATL’s recycling arm, processed over 120 kt of batteries in 2024, with 270 kt of capacity in operation. An additional 300 kt+ is under construction, with longer-term plans targeting 1,000 kt. Technologically, multiple routes - including hydrometallurgy and direct regeneration - achieve >95% recovery rates for nickel, cobalt, and manganese. China’s ~80% global market share underpins a closed-loop lithium battery lifecycle.
