Overcapacity & Global Balance: China’s Nominal Battery Production Capacity Exceeds Global Shipments CHINA'S NOMINAL BATTERY PRODUCTION CAPACITY VS. GLOBAL EV & ESS BATTERY SHIPMENTS GWh
Note: China's nominal production capacity is presented on an average effective basis.
Overcapacity: China's nominal battery production capacity already exceeds both domestic and total global shipments. As of 2025, based on publicly available information, nominal domestic capacity surpasses 3 TWh, with over 3.5 TWh under construction or planned. Intensifying competition has driven strategy divergence: leading manufacturers continue Li-ion expansion, while others delay or cancel EV battery projects and pivot toward ESS, consumer batteries or next-generation technologies such as sodium-ion, solid-state, and eVTOL batteries. Meanwhile, Chinese battery companies are accelerating overseas manufacturing in APAC and Europe to localize production and mitigate evolving tax and trade risks.
