Lithium Argyrodites (Li6PS5X) - Solid Electrolytes with High Li+ Mobility
Crystal structure of Li6PS5I
In 2008, Hans-Jörg Deiseroth at the University of Siegen in Germany introduced Li6PS5I, Li6PS5Br, and Li6PS5Cl as argyrodite lithium superionic conductors. The team based their materials on the mineral argyrodite Ag8GeS6 because of its high mobility and conductivity of Ag+ ions and the similar ionic radii of Cu+ (74 pm) and Li+ (73 pm) to Ag+ (114 pm). Li6PS5X development showed that crystal engineering could produce Li+ conductivities (10 -2 to 10-3 S cm-1) approaching that of liquid electrolytes. Source: Angewandte Chemie 120.4 (2008): 767-770.
