Fatigue of Li Metal Anode in Solid-state Batteries Methodology: using operando scanning electron microscopy and phase-field simulations, the failure of SSBs is closely linked to the fatigue of the lithium metal anode, which markedly contributes to interface degradation and dendrite growth in SSBs Conclusion: the identification of Li metal fatigue in SSBs clarifies the origin of cell failure and offers an opportunity to establish a quantitative correlation among current density, capacity, mechanical properties of Li metal anodes, and lifespans of SSBs

INTERFACE EVOLUTION CHARACTERIZATION

FATIGUE OF LI METAL ANODES

Source: Science 388, 311-316 (205)

During Li stripping, a Li atom undergoes electron loss and transforms into Li+, traversing the Li/LLZTO (solid electrolyte) interface and creating a vacancy As stripping proceeds, vacancies accumulate at the interface, leading to void formation and subsequent voltage increase

When the fatigue test reaches a certain cycle, da/dN increases to infinity, indicating the final fracture induced by fatigue A higher cyclic stress results in a faster slope increase and shorter cycle lives like the effects of increasing the current density on the cycle life of SSBs The analogous patterns of voltage cycle number curve and the evolution of crack lengths in metallic fatigue suggest a shared fatigue-driven failure mode
