Transportation Battery VC/Growth Investment Low & Shifting Away from Conventional Lithium-Ion TRANSPORTATION BATTERY INVESTMENTS BY SECTOR

TRANSPORTATION BATTERY INVESTMENTS BY STAGE Funding ($bn)

Funding ($bn)

VC/Growth investment in transportation batteries including EV chemistries and recycling, ($1.5bn) was down 73% from the 2021-2023 period ($5.4bn/year). Investment is shifting to solid-state and silicon anode technology as VC investors shy away from conventional lithium-ion battery manufacturing after the collapse of Northvolt.

Both early-stage and late-stage funding have dropped ~70% since 2021-2023, with the largest dollar-amount decrease in late-stage. Chinese battery dominance could be reducing VC investors’ appetite for both large late-stage rounds for battery manufacturing and early-stage rounds for battery innovation.
