Sodium-ion Technology Roadmaps and Scenarios for Techno-economic Competitiveness against LIBs Cell price parity does not translate into total cost of ownership parity because market value also depends on revenue impacts, long term durability and reliability, and the complexity of thermal management and battery management systems. Yao et al. show that sodium ion can reach cost parity with low cost lithium ion chemistries such as LFP in the 2030s if energy density and materials efficiency improve. Their scenario modelling indicates that engineering improvements drive competitiveness more than scale and that sodium ion becomes more attractive when lithium or graphite prices rise.
