Intergrown O-type and P-type Sodium Layered Oxides Enhancing stability via interphase engineering Sodium-ion batteries, being commercialized, are on the track of improvement to cover more and more applications. To achieve that, requirements on higher energy density and cycling stability are often highlighted. Utilizing intergrown P2/P3 and P/O structures in Na-ion batteries is improving electrochemical stability due to synergic effects in biphasic composites. However, interlayer gliding causing phase transitions eventually leads to deterioration of the performance. Zhou X., et al., (2025) demonstrates the possibility of the restraining the phase transitions by interphase engineering, which enhances cycling stability and rate capability.

The difference between phase changes with different phase distributions: P3 phase transforms into O phase which can be mitigated by modifying phase distribution.

Cycle performance over 500 cycles demonstrating higher initial capacity and capacity retention for P2/P3 structures

Interphase engineering is an important part of optimizing active materials with bulk phase transitions. By elucidating gliding degradation mechanism for intergrown Na-ion oxides, it has been demonstrated that changing phase distribution results in avoiding unfavorable phase transitions.
