Separator Safety Improvements Comparing separator materials in commercial cell formats
Modifying commercial separators: smart membranes that resist thermal runaway
In cylindrical 21700 cell formats made from cellulose (cel) and cellulose nanofibers (cnf) show improved performance and thermal stability metrics, however additional functionality is still required to match the strength and safety of polyolefin materials. [1]
Engineering separators coated with polymeric materials that are engineered to react with thermal runaway products dramatically increase the time to thermal runaway. [2]
Modifying commercial separators with novel materials extends thermal runaway windows, and thus overall cell safety, more than next-generation separator materials such as cellulose or cellulose nanofibers.
