Worldwide Patent Activity by Main Battery Innovation Topics 2025 2025 patent applications highlight accelerating development in current collector, binder, electrolytes, BMS, separator, and cells. Applications relating to electrolyte inventions mainly encompass advanced compositions of liquid electrolytes to reach higher operation voltage and better stability as well as solid-state electrolytes. Battery cell inventions are related to composition, architecture and manufacturing method. Compared to 2024, anode and recycling applications show a slight decline whereas cathode applications show a significant decline. Thermal materials remains almost stable compared to 2024.
2024-2025 GLOBAL PATENT APPLICATIONS IN BATTERY FIELD SPLIT BY MAIN INNOVATION TOPICS +7%
The percentages are the CAGR between 2024 and 2025. CAGR is the Compound Annual Growth Rate calculated with the formula (Value2025-Value2024)-1. A patent family is a set of patent applications filed in multiple countries to protect a single invention by a common inventor(s). A first patent application is filed in one country – the priority country – and is then extended to other countries. Source: Patent search was done in December 2025 by KnowMade, using keywords and IPC/CPCs (H01M, H02J-007) in Orbit (Questel) which provides 100+ million patent documents from 100 patent offices (USA, Japan, Europe, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.).
